Gete's Family

Gete is a hardworking, expressive mother of three, who is an abuse survivor.

At the age of 5, Gete was brought from the countryside to live with her aunt who promised to send her to school. She was expected to watch her cousins during the daytime, and to attend school at night. Eventually she moved out and began working as a maid. Gete then met her husband, with whom she had two children. Her husband was both physically and emotionally abusive, and after 5 years of trying to make their marriage work, they divorced. Her ex-husband was granted primary custody because of her lack of income. Gete has since remarried and had another child. Financial pressure is a constant stress in her current relationship. Despite this, Gete has diverse skills and work experience, consistently demonstrating her willingness to find creative ways to sustain her family.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Gete’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
