Misirak's Family

Misirak is a devoted single mother to a 3-year-old with special needs.

Misirak was raised by her grandfather and completed grade 10. She worked selling fruit throughout her school years to help support her family, distracting her from her studies. After high school, Misirak moved to Addis and began a job as a household cook and cleaner. She then met her husband and began running a small coffee business. Her marriage was supportive until they had a son with special needs; at which time, the father abandoned them, blaming Misirak’s genetics as the cause of their son’s challenges. Misirak was extremely discouraged by her husband’s shocking behavior and perspective. Misirak receives support from her church and close friends, but even with this and a small monthly amount from her ex-husband, Misirak is barely able to feed her son. She frequently skips meals to ensure her son eats. Misirak is highly motivated and eager to provide for her family if given the opportunity.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Misirak’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
