Mulu's Family

Mulu is a reserved single mother who lives by the trash dump and is struggling to provide for her son.

She grew up in the Gondar region with her parents and has no formal education. Mulu came to Addis Ababa when she was nine years old, where she worked as a maid for three years. After some time, she returned to the countryside and opened a small shiro house (roadside restaurant.) During this time Mulu met a man who quickly became her husband. Shortly after getting pregnant, her husband left for another city to find work, however she hasn’t heard from him since. Since he lost his parents when he was young, Mulu has no way of contacting her husband and is worried something bad may have happened to him.

As a result of losing her husband and having limited contact with her own family, Mulu has resorted to begging and often skips meals to provide for her son first. Currently she lives at the Koshe (garbage dump), in a small house made of mud and wood; thankfully, she has a few good friendships and receives some support from her neighbors.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Mulu’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
