Tsehay is a sensitive mother with a special needs child, who faces discrimination and is struggling to support her family.
When Tsehay was just a young child, her parents divorced and she was then raised by her stepmother, who was unkind to her and her siblings. Although Tsehay was an intelligent student and did well in school, she was often forced to skip class to do household chores. She eventually ran away and moved to Addis Ababa to work as a maid. Unfortunately, here she also was denied the opportunity to continue her education. After several years working in Addis, she travelled to another country for higher wages, to help support her father’s family. When she returned, she met a man who became her husband. He was originally a soldier, and currently works as a day laborer. Together they have two children, the youngest which has special needs. As Tsehay is busy taking care of her daughter fulltime, she is not able to work, and there are days where the family does not have enough to eat.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Tsehay’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical help, spiritual care, counselling, education, life skills training, opportunities for income generation, business development and employment. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in our daycare and many education and community programs.
