Abebech's Family

Thank you! We are pleased to share that Abebech is fully sponsored!

Abebech is a single mother of two girls, who is struggling daily with the difficult task of survival in Korah. She grew up in the countryside with her mother and siblings, after her father passed away during her childhood. Rare for a young woman in Ethiopia, Abebech studied up until grade 11 before travelling to an Arab country to support her family. Working as a cook and cleaner, Abebech sent home her earnings which helped her family to build a house in the countryside. Later, Abebech married a man she met in Addis Ababa and together they started their own family. At first, her husband was supportive and covered the household expenses, allowing Abebech to care for the children. Later, however, his behavior began to change, and he also took advantage of Abebech’s savings to purchase a car.

Two years ago, Abebech’s husband abandoned them, and life became very tough for her and her daughters. Abebech dreams about becoming an Amharic teacher, but instead fetches water and delivers firewood to earn money for rent and food, and she often skips meals to ensure her daughters can eat.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Abebech’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
