Ayalinesh and her husband are facing desperate circumstances, with little income to care for their four children.
Growing up in rural Ethiopia, Ayalinesh was never given the opportunity to attend school. Instead, she spent her childhood helping her parents with farming and shepherding. At a young age, she moved to the capital city in search of work. Life was not easy, and when her mother and sister passed away, she took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. She brought her 4-year-old sister to live with her, making sure she was enrolled in school so she could have the opportunities Ayalinesh never had. After marrying her husband, Birhanu, the two of them raised her sister together while also building their own family of four children.
Ayalinesh and Birhanu face many challenges. Both are illiterate, which makes finding steady work very difficult. Birhanu works as a day laborer, but his income is not enough to cover the family’s rent or provide food on a regular basis. They live in a small home made of wood and mud, and too often their children go to bed hungry. Through these hardships, Ayalinesh remains strong and determined. She dreams of breaking this cycle of poverty and building a brighter future for her children.
