With newborn twins, Banchu and her husband are struggling to provide for their children after their rent more than doubled.
Banchu was born and raised in the countryside with her mother, who passed away when she was 10 years old. Barely having time to process her loss, Banchu was brought to Addis Ababa with her aunt to find work as a maid. Eventually Banchu met her husband, and they have been together for 15 years. They have always had a good relationship and were very grateful to welcome their first child 7 years ago. Banchu’s husband was able to provide for the family with his long-time job as a barista at a restaurant. However, one day he was in a terrible car accident in which he sustained injuries to his arm, requiring an artificial metal implant. Since then, Banchu’s husband has been unable to continue his previous work, and now works as a guard for a meager salary.
Three months ago, Banchu gave birth to twin boys. Already desperate for food, Banchu has not had a proper meal since, and her husband is deeply concerned about the welfare of his family. Recently they learned of more health concerns, including his glaucoma, which further exacerbates this family’s need.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Banchu’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
