Birhane’s Family

Birhane and her husband scavenged at the Korah garbage dump for eight years to provide for their family.

Living on the edge of the dump with their infant son and two daughters, they pay very high rental costs for a one room mud shack that is in great disrepair. Birhane’s husband Haile used to work as a daily laborer but became ill and heavy lifting aggravated his condition. Both parents have serious health issues, needing ongoing medical care. Birhane and Haile are motivated to work hard and change the circumstances they are in. Haile is a committed father and is very interested in becoming a barber so that he can provide for his family.

Through your support this family will be able to receive holistic support such as such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care and counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give Birhane's family an opportunity to participate in all our community and youth programs.
