Birke's Family

As a result of hard physical labor, Birke suffers from back and hip pain and is unable to work any longer.

She was born in the countryside and raised by her mother with her siblings. When Birke was 15, she came to Addis Ababa with her niece in hopes of finding a better job. She started evening classes, however had to drop out during grade 1 to focus on her work as a maid. Later, Birke took on a second job as a cook at a restaurant where she met a man who eventually became her husband. Together they worked to pave a future for their family; Birke washing clothes and her husband doing different labor jobs. The strenuous work took a toll on Birke’s body, resulting in her needing two c-sections when delivering her children, which left her with persistent backpain. However, due to their dire situation, Birke returned to work shortly after giving birth.

Presently, Birke and her family live in a small rental house made of wood and mud, which is near to 'Koshe' (city garbage dump). The roof leaks and the floor floods during the rainy season. They are behind on rent and struggling to find a means of stable income. Birke's husband is supportive towards his family and works hard to provide what he can for his family. Even so, Birke and her husband often skip meals to try and feed their children.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Birke’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical help, spiritual care, counselling, education, life skills training, opportunities for income generation, business development and employment. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
