Fantanesh's Family

Fantanesh is a resourceful and determined, widowed mother of twin girls who survived by scavenging at the trash dump.

Growing up in Northern Ethiopia, money was scarce. When Fantanesh's father died 10 years ago, her mother could no longer support her so she came to Korah with her husband in search of a better life. Shortly after the birth of Fantanesh's twin daughters, her husband passed away. This left Fantanesh in a very desperate financial situation, especially since she has no formal education. Without sponsorship, Fantanesh would still be begging and scavenging through the trash at the dump, exposing herself and her daughters to dangerous toxins in the air while searching for scraps of food to eat or small items to sell.

Through sponsorship Fantanesh's family is able to receive holistic support such as such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care and counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our community and youth programs.
