Kidist is a young, single mother in need of child support and a means to further her education.
Her mother died when she was young, and she was raised by her father and stepmother in Addis Ababa. Kidist became an orphan around three years ago and began to work as a maid. She did her best to keep up with her schooling by attending evening classes. During this time, Kidist became pregnant, however she kept this a secret from both her boyfriend and her employer. When she was 7 months along, Kidist became ill and was brought to a hospital where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. With her ambitions to continue her education and become an engineer, Kidist considered giving up her child. However, she was referred to Ye-Amlak Lijoch Foundation, an organization that provides support for young, vulnerable mothers. Without any assistance from her child’s father, she decided to give it a try, and was warmly welcomed. Here she learned how to care for and nurture her baby and has stayed with them for 7 months. Kidist has high aspirations and will benefit well from HFK’s Family Empowerment Program.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Kidist’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
