Kiya's Family

From a young age, Kiya has faced grief, discrimination, and abandonment, however she is motivated to change her life through education.

Kiya’s father passed away when she was two years old, and following this, his family shunned Kiya and her mother due to her mother being from a different ethnic background. When Kiya was 12, her mother died from breast cancer, leaving her an orphan. For several years she worked as a maid, attending evening classes to keep up with her education. She then met a policeman who became her husband, and shortly after became pregnant. He did not want a child and told Kiya to abort the baby, however she refused and chose her baby over their relationship. A kind woman she met referred her to Ye-Amlak Lijoch Foundation, an organization that provides support for young, vulnerable mothers. Kiya joined this program and learned how to love and nurture her daughter. From the trauma she has endured, Kiya struggles with her identity and worth. She desires to continue her education, and dreams of becoming a medical doctor.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Kiya’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
