Leila is a strong mother of a large family who are facing hunger and health challenges.
During her childhood, Leila lived in the southern region of Ethiopia with her family. She did not receive any education and was married at the age of 14 to a man who lived in Addis Ababa. For seven years Leila travelled to and from the city to visit her husband and began to raise her family on her own in the countryside. Later she moved to Addis to live with him and within a few more years, the family had grown to four children. Leila worked during this time to help provide for their children as her husbands’ income was not sufficient. Five years ago, Leila gave birth to her youngest son, who has limited mental development which has further exacerbated this family’s need. She is now unable to work as his challenges are too much for the school system to handle, and he needs a personal caregiver. Thus, Leila and her family and struggling to survive on one income, at times even scavenging at the trash dump to find recyclables to resell.
