Mestawut's Family

Caring for her two young children full-time, Mestawut dreams of helping her family escape the grip of poverty.

Mestawut comes from a large family in rural Ethiopia. After completing grade 8, she moved to Addis Ababa to pursue vocational training. However, city life proved far more challenging than she expected. In search of better opportunities, she traveled to an Arab country, where she worked for two years and regularly sent money home to support her family. When she returned, she was devastated to learn that a family member had used her savings, leaving her with little to start over.

Now married for six years, Mestawut and her husband have worked diligently to build a stable life together. However, rising living costs and limited job opportunities have made it increasingly difficult to provide for their children. Mestawut stays home to care for their two young ones while the family depends on her husband’s small and irregular income. Each day is a struggle to meet their most basic needs, yet they continue to dream of a more secure and hopeful future.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Mestawut’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
