Mubarika is a single, young mother who came to Addis Ababa at the age of 17 after her mother died.
She lives in a metal home next to a latrine and is struggling to feed her child. Mubarika is quite driven and entrepreneurial; after working as a maid for a family for 6 years, she launched a small coffee business using a marketplace she received from the government when another person declined the space. Her employer was so supportive that they let her live with them while she launched this new endeavor. Mubarika ran her business for one year, during which time she met her husband who is a soldier. Her husband was called to duty during the war in Northern Ethiopia in 2021. She learned she was pregnant shortly after he left and told her husband. He has not contacted her or returned since he left. Just before she gave birth, she was forced out of her business when her marketplace was taken back by the person who was originally offered the market space. She is now struggling to pay for rent, especially while caring for her baby.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Mubarika’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical help, spiritual care, counselling, education, life skills training, opportunities for income generation, business development and employment.
