Naima is a cheerful and assertive girl who brings much joy to her family.
Through HFK’s Family Empowerment program, her mother Fatuma, opened a small shop and is teaching her children the value of perseverance and hard work.
Recently, Naima received some exciting news regarding her education - she has been selected to attend private school! In the past, she has attended a local government school, but she was chosen for this opportunity because of her academic performance and participation in our youth and education programs. Students are selected to receive this scholarship by our Ethiopian staff based on criteria such as GPA, regular attendance at our tutoring, library, and youth programs. Naima has a 66% average and shows much potential! When looking at her GPA we consider that girls are at a disadvantage due to familial obligations and societal expectations. For example, girls are often expected to do the familial cooking and childcare within the home in addition to their school studies.
We believe private school will be an important and positive change in Naima’s life and we are excited for this next step in her education journey. Naima is in Grade 4 at Kore Berhane Wengel (KBW) school and will have the opportunity to be taught in smaller classrooms, with greater support from teachers and receive Christian teaching. This Educational Sponsorship will cover tuition, uniform, textbooks, and school supplies. In turn, this will help Naima break the cycle of poverty by empowering her mind and offering hope for a better future.
