Feeding her children is a daily challenge for Nitsuh, a devoted single mother.
Nitsuh had a difficult childhood—her parents divorced when she was 10, and she was separated from her sister when sent to live with her father and stepmother. After completing grade 10, Nitsuh moved to Addis Ababa in search of work. She married and had two daughters. When she became pregnant with her second child, her husband pressured her to terminate the pregnancy. Nitsuh, believing the child was a gift from God, chose to keep her. This conflict eventually led to the end of their marriage, and Nitsuh now lives independently, raising her daughters alone.
To support her family, Nitsuh sells vegetables and spices in front of her home, washes clothes, and takes on any odd jobs she can find. She and her daughters live in a small wooden and mud house that barely has space for a mattress. Struggling to cover rent and provide food, Nitsuh does her best to buy bread each day so her children will not go hungry.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Nitsuh’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
