Selam, a new and single mother, worries often for her parents and relatives who live in a war-affected region of the country.
As a child, Selam was raised in Northern Ethiopia by her parents, and completed her Grade 8 Education. She was promised a good career by a family member in a different city and travelled there to work as a cook in a hotel. Selam held several different jobs over the next few years and met her husband with whom she became pregnant. He was unhappy with this news and abandoned her. Selam gave birth to a healthy baby boy, but without financial assistance, she used up all her savings during her delivery. With nowhere to go and no money, Selam was devastated. Thankfully, her doctor referred her to Ye-Amlak Lijoch Foundation, an organization that supports young, vulnerable mothers. Selam has been living there for five months, learning how to care for and nurture her son. Selam is a strong and energetic mother who has struggled with life’s challenges and will benefit from the Family Empowerment Program.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Selam’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
