Rejected and abandoned by her husband, Simegn, a single mother of two girls, is in a dire financial situation.
At the age of 13, Simegn’s aunt brought her to Addis, where she worked as a maid for several years. She experienced some trauma in her adolescence and became pregnant at a young age. The child’s father was unsupportive, and after Simegn gave birth, she was on the streets begging and selling boiled beans while carrying her baby on her back. During this time, she met a man who became her husband, and they had another child. After her third baby died during childbirth, her husband began to spend nights away from home, resulting in tension and conflict in their relationship. Simegn tried to be patient with him and work things out through mediation with elders, however the situation got worse, and he eventually left the family. Simegn’s savings are dwindling as she strives to provide the basic needs for her two girls. Despite her challenges, Simegn is optimistic for the future and desires to be educated and start a small business.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Simegn’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
