Takila's Family

Widowed and raising three children and a young grandchild, Takila works tirelessly to provide for her family.

Her hardships began early—at just 11 years old, she was forced into an arranged marriage, which brought years of trauma and struggle. By 16, she gave birth to her first child, followed by two more. She soon discovered that her husband suffered from severe mental illness, and during one episode he committed violent acts that led to his imprisonment. To protect her children, Takila fled with them to Addis Ababa. After his eventual release, her husband passed away, leaving her to care for the family on her own.

To make ends meet, Takila takes on physically demanding work, including assisting on construction sites and cleaning jobs whenever possible. Despite earning very little and working long hours, she does everything she can to ensure her children have at least one meal each day. With minimal education and no ability to read or write, her opportunities remain limited, yet she continues to persevere. Today, she supports not only her children but also her daughter and young grandchild.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Takila’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
