Tirhas' Family

Tirhas is a widow and a mother of three who is also caring for her 15 year old brother.

Tirhas left her family of origin after some trauma and found herself living on the streets of Addis Ababa. She met her husband, began a family with him and also took in her brother and sister when her mother died. Her sister has since married and moved on, however her brother continues to live with Tirhas’s family. Since her husband passed away from a medical condition, her brother helps with babysitting. Prior to joining Hope for Korah, he had not had not been in school for four years. Tirhas and her family lived in a one room mud home which she paid for by washing clothes and begging. The family usually ate from hotel leftovers. The children go to Berta breakfast program and the school age children receive lunch at school.  She usually begged for their dinner. Tirhas is hoping to one day become employed and earn a proper income in order to provide for her family.

Through sponsorship Tirhas' family is able to receive holistic support such as such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care and counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program also gives this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
