Yisgedu's Family

Yisgedu is living near the trash dump in a tiny home made of plywood and metal. She is a single parent to her two children and her granddaughter.

Yisgedu is a strong and protective mother. At the age of 7, Yisgedu was given in an arranged marriage and had her first daughter at the age of 14. Yisgedu's first daughter died as a teenager while she was giving birth, leaving the granddaughter whom Yisgedu is also raising alongside her other children. Due to their larger family, many landlords do not want to rent to them. Yisgedu tries to mostly earn money through washing clothes, but at times she needs to beg in order to feed her children. She lives with chronic illness, but has kept her health condition a secret from her children as she does not want to burden them with how dire their living situation is. Yisgedu is unwavering in her determination to provide for her children and is very concerned for their emotional wellbeing.

Through your support Yisgedu’s family will be able to receive holistic support such as such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care and counselling, education, health and life skills training. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
