Tiringo's Family

To help her family survive, Tiringo’s older children have side jobs, which is negatively affecting their education.

Following the divorce of her parents, Tiringo grew up with her father and stepmother in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Although it was her desire to go to school, this was not supported by her parents and instead she began working at a young age. Tiringo moved to Addis on her own, to find a job as a maid and during this time met her husband. However her husband struggled with addiction and after having two children, their marriage fell apart. Tiringo was then left to support their two children alone. Over the next few years she tried providing for her family by selling sundry items, tea, coffee, and washing clothes. Eventually Tiringo gave birth to a third baby, however this child’s father abandoned Tiringo as well.

Asking her children to go out and work while they should be in school has been hard for Tiringo. She knows first-hand how difficult it is to be successful without proper education, and desires to find a way to provide for her kids and give them the opportunities she was not afforded.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Tiringo’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
