What the Basket Weavers Want You to Know

In Their Own Words - What the Basket Weavers Want You to Know. Why Hope on the Move Matters!

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been highlighting Stories from Korah on our social media—real-life glimpses into the impact transportation has on our community. These stories show just how essential transportation is, and why we’re working toward the goal of purchasing a used van for Hope for Korah.

Transportation touches nearly every part of our ministry—from urgent medical trips to program support—but for our basket weavers, it’s also about livelihood and dignity. In the video below, these women share how having access to a rented vehicle provided by HFK has made a meaningful difference in their lives.

With transportation, they’re able to purchase raw materials like grass from one of the largest markets in East Africa, deliver finished baskets to embassies, hotels, and international bazaars, attend medical appointments, and pick up essential supplies. It also opens doors to market their products, connect with visiting teams and locals, and participate in opportunities they would otherwise miss.

The basket weavers also want to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported this endeavor so far. Your generosity is already making a real difference in their daily lives and work.

Watch what the Basket Weavers have to say about Hope on the Move.

Did You Know?

Did you know HFK arranges for 100 kg (220 lbs) of grass to be delivered every 10 days so the women can keep creating their beautiful work? By camel? Just kidding! We use rented vehicles to make it happen. But it is a big load! A dedicated vehicle would make this—and so much more—far more efficient, dependable, and sustainable.

The strong grasses used by our basket weavers are made from date palm leaves, sustainably harvested in Ethiopia’s Afar region. There, the fronds are often transported across the desert by camel—yes, really! Once they reach the city, it’s up to us (and a rented vehicle!) to get them the rest of the way.
