Asnakech is raising three children on her own, including her youngest who has special needs.
Growing up in the countryside with her mother and sister, Asnakech never knew her father. At eight years old, she lost her mother and went to live with a neighbor. Later, she moved to the city with her neighbor’s daughter and began working, eventually meeting her husband. Together they had three children and did their best to care for them as a family. However, when their youngest child was six months old, he became seriously ill with meningitis, which led to seizures and developmental regression. This profoundly affected Asnakech’s husband, who eventually left the city in search of work and is currently not living with or supporting the family.
Now living in a one-room hut in the Korah slum, Asnakech and her children face significant poverty, ongoing health challenges, and food insecurity. Despite her strong work ethic and willingness to work, Asnakech struggles to provide for her children and is in desperate need of support. A stable and nurturing environment at the HFK daycare for her special needs son would make a profound difference for this vulnerable family as they seek hope and a brighter future.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Asnakech’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our daycare, education, and community programs.
