Lubaba's Family

Lubaba's family lives beside the garbage dump in unsafe conditions, without running water and facing eviction.

Lubaba grew up in rural Ethiopia without a mother and was raised by her grandmother until the age of 12, when she was sent to the city to work. At 22, she married a much older man, and together they now have four children, including twins. During times of extreme hardship, they sent the twins to live with relatives in the countryside but ultimately brought them back when conditions there proved even more challenging.

Her husband is now unable to work due to a construction site injury, compounded by chronic kidney disease and declining health. Lubaba is the sole provider and works tirelessly to support her family, selling cabbage during the day and roasted corn at night.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Lubaba’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
