Amaru's Family

Working day and night scavenging at the garbage dump, Amaru did all she could to provide for her family.

Amaru lost her mother at a young age and was forced to leave school and move to Addis Ababa to find work. After meeting her husband, she began building a family while working hard to support their growing household. When her husband became bedridden with tuberculosis for approximately two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, Amaru became the primary provider for their four children. With few options, she worked long hours collecting recyclable materials at the garbage dump to provide for her family.

Today, Amaru and her husband live with their four children in a small, one-room mud house. Although her husband continues to face health challenges following his illness, Amaru works hard to care for their young twins and support her family. With limited employment opportunities, she struggles to cover their rent and daily needs. Despite these challenges, Amaru remains determined to build a safe and hopeful future for her children.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Amaru’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
