Fatuma's Family

Orphaned as an infant and enduring abuse as a teenager, Fatuma fled her home at just 15 years old.

Fatuma’s childhood was marked by trauma, hardship, and limited access to education — she attended school only until grade three. As a teenager, political unrest forced her to move to Addis Ababa, where she began working to survive. She was married for nearly eight years before her husband left while she was pregnant with their second child. He struggled with addictions, which created many difficulties for the family, and eventually left her for another woman. Fatuma has not seen him in over two years.

Since then, she has faced immense challenges caring for her children, covering rent, and putting food on the table. She lives in a small, fragile home made of wood and mud. Often, she depends on the kindness of neighbors for extra food, or she knocks on doors seeking help to feed her children.

Monthly sponsorship will provide Fatuma’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, daycare, education, and community programs.
