Passing Traditions to the Next Generation

It is a joy to see our daycare children learning, celebrating, and creating memories together.

Our amazing daycare staff love teaching these little ones about the traditions and culture that are an important part of their Ethiopian heritage.

This month, our daycare children had the opportunity to celebrate two joyful Ethiopian traditions—Buhe and Ashenda—learning through music, dancing, community, and meaningful time together.

Our daycare boys had so much fun as they celebrated Buhe, a traditional Ethiopian festival filled with singing, dancing, and community. Traditionally, groups of boys and young men go from house to house in their neighbourhoods, singing special Hoya Hoye songs and receiving treats or gifts from the families they visit. Our boys were delighted to take part in this lively tradition, experiencing firsthand the joy of singing and celebrating together.

Our daycare girls also celebrated Ashenda, a beautiful Ethiopian tradition that honours girls and women while celebrating friendship, music, culture, and community. Dressed in their beautiful traditional outfits, the girls were so excited to visit our Elders Home, where they danced and shared in the celebration. Their visit was a special blessing to the elders, who love welcoming these little visitors and seeing Ethiopian traditions continue.

Celebrations like these give our children an opportunity to connect with their heritage while learning valuable lessons about community, friendship, generosity, unity, and respect for others. We are so thankful for the loving staff who create these special opportunities for our children and help make each celebration a meaningful and joyful experience.
