Korah is an urban slum on the edge of the city trash dump in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Situated next to the dump is Abune Basilios School.  There are more than 5,000 students at the school.  These kids are from some of the poorest of the poor families in Korah.  The school had no running water for two years and their well quit working more than 8 years ago.

Everyday 20 support staff walked 1 km to the nearest water source and returned carrying 25 liters of water on their backs. Students were not able to wash their hands and toilets could not be cleaned! The conditions were so poor, teachers did not want to work there. One year ago, upon learning of this situation, Hope for Korah began trucking in water every week allowing toilets to be cleaned and students to wash their hands once a day. But a long-term solution is needed.

Our goal is to build a well that will provide the school with a sustainable source of water for years to come.  The plan is to build a deep well with a high yield pump and power generator in the spring/summer of 2022.   The system will be setup to fill the 100,000 liter reservoir every other day to meet the needs of the students, staff and dairy cows who provide milk for the 900+ kindergarten children.  The school is also planning to allow access to the well water by neighboring residents.

Watch Video - Bringing Water to Basilios School:

At the time of filming, Hope for Korah (HFK) was trucking in 20,000 litres of water per week. Due to covid restrictions lifting and increased school enrollment HFK is now bringing in 100,000 litres per week.  The need for a deep high-yield well is great and will bring a sustainable, long-term solution for this school!
